Care Jobs
People who look to take on care jobs will generally either work as carers in a home such as a nursing or residential home or they will work for an agency that sends them out to visit people in their own homes. In this instance the agency may be run by the state or may be a private agency that contracts this kind of work from the state or that offers private care services.
There are various kinds of care jobs in residential homes. Carers here will generally support medical staff and help residents with their everyday needs. So, duties here could include:
- Helping people get up in the morning and go to bed in the evening
- Helping people dress
- Helping people bathe and wash themselves
- Helping people with general personal and minor medical care
- Keeping people company
- Helping people feed themselves
- Helping people learn new skills and activities
Home based care jobs will generally involve visiting a range of people during the day who need help in some way or other. So here, you could:
- Help people get up in the morning and dress themselves and get ready for bed in the morning
- Deliver meals and/or make sure that they eat and have a drink
- Help people have bath and wash themselves
- Do shopping for people or take them out shopping
- Do cleaning and household chores for people
In both cases it is possible to get into the care sector without any particular formal qualifications although many agencies will offer training and/or academic courses for their staff when they take them on.
